2023 £5 Coronation Matte BU Inc Box & Cert

The 2023 Coronation Five Sovereign was issued by The Royal Mint to commemorate the Coronation of King Charles III, featuring a special crowned portrait created exclusively for coins issued in the Coronation year. Struck in 22 carat gold with a distinctive matt Brilliant Uncirculated finish, the Five Sovereign represents the largest denomination within the traditional Sovereign family.

The reverse features Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic St George and the Dragon design, depicting England's patron saint mounted on horseback with sword in hand above the dragon. First introduced on the modern Sovereign in 1817, Pistrucci's design has become one of the most recognisable motifs in British coinage. The obverse features the crowned portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings, distinguishing the Coronation coinage from the uncrowned definitive portrait introduced following His Majesty's accession.

Limited to just 450 individually presented coins, the 2023 Brilliant Uncirculated Five Sovereign is a particularly limited issue from King Charles III's Coronation year. Struck to the traditional Five Sovereign specification at 39.94g and containing 36.61g of fine gold, the coin combines the historic Pistrucci reverse with the special Coronation portrait and an unusual all-over matt finish.
