2001 £5 100th Anniversary Proof Inc Box & Certificate

The 2001 Queen Victoria Centenary £5 Gold Proof Coin was issued by The Royal Mint to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of Queen Victoria, whose reign lasted for more than 63 years and defined much of Britain’s Victorian era. Struck in 22 carat gold to Proof standard, the £5 coin is also commonly referred to as a Five Pound Crown or Quintuple Sovereign.

The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the inscription ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 2001. The reverse was designed by Mary Milner-Dickens and presents a portrait of Queen Victoria positioned within a large letter “V”. The letter incorporates decorative ironwork inspired by the engineering and architecture associated with the Victorian period, while the surrounding design evokes the appearance of the Crystal Palace, one of the most recognisable symbols of Victorian innovation and the Great Exhibition.

The published issue limit for the 2001 Queen Victoria Centenary £5 Gold Proof was 3,500 coins, although Royal Mint sales records indicate that only 2,098 gold examples were ultimately issued. Struck to the traditional £5 specification at 39.94g and containing 36.61g of fine gold, this example is supplied in its original Royal Mint presentation case with numbered Certificate of Authenticity and accompanying colour information booklet.
