About this coin
Issued to commemorate the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, the 2023 Gold Proof Half Sovereign marks a significant moment in the modern Sovereign series. Struck in 22 carat gold to The Royal Mint's Proof standard, this special Coronation issue forms part of the first Sovereign collection to feature the official crowned coinage portrait of King Charles III.
The obverse features the crowned portrait of His Majesty by Martin Jennings, created specifically for the Coronation coinage and reserved for this important royal occasion. The reverse continues the historic Sovereign tradition with Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic depiction of Saint George slaying the dragon, a design associated with the Sovereign since its introduction in 1817.
Certified by NGC as PF70 Ultra Cameo, this example has achieved the highest numerical grade available for a proof coin. The Ultra Cameo designation recognises the strong contrast between the frosted design elements and deeply mirrored fields. Combining the historic Coronation, the first crowned portrait of King Charles III on the Half Sovereign and the highest possible NGC grade, this is a significant modern British Sovereign issue.
