About this coin

The 2009 Gold Proof Kew Gardens 50p was issued by The Royal Mint to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, one of Britain's most celebrated botanical institutions. With a limited mintage of just 629 coins, this 22 carat gold edition represents one of the most exclusive versions of the famous Kew Gardens design. This example has been authenticated and encapsulated by NGC with the grade PF69, recognising its exceptionally well-preserved proof finish.

The obverse features the fourth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. Introduced to British coinage in 1998, the portrait depicts the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, accompanied by the traditional royal inscription and the denomination FIFTY PENCE. This familiar effigy provides a connection to the circulating Kew Gardens 50p, which became widely recognised among collectors for its unusually low circulation mintage.

The reverse features Christopher Le Brun's distinctive depiction of the Great Pagoda at Kew Gardens, surrounded by an elegantly winding botanical vine. The dates 1759 and 2009 appear on either side of the structure, marking 250 years since the gardens' foundation, while the word Kew is incorporated beneath the pagoda. Struck in 22 carat gold to proof standard, the design combines architectural detail with botanical symbolism, highlighted by the polished fields and carefully finished relief.

The Kew Gardens 50p became an important modern British commemorative design after the circulating version gained recognition for its scarcity. While 210,000 examples were issued for circulation, only 629 gold proof coins were struck, distinguishing this edition from its circulating counterpart. Combining a celebrated commemorative design, a limited gold proof mintage and NGC PF69 certification, the 2009 Gold Proof Kew Gardens 50p holds a distinctive position within modern British numismatics.

Why this coin

NGC PF69, a high numerical proof grade recognising a fully struck coin with nearly imperceptible imperfections.

Limited mintage of just 629 coins, making the gold proof edition significantly scarcer than the circulating Kew Gardens 50p.

Christopher Le Brun's iconic Kew Gardens design, celebrating the gardens' 250th anniversary with the Great Pagoda and surrounding botanical detail.

On Mintage

The low mintage is another positive from a collecting point of view. There is no guarantee of what a coin may do in the future, but with only a relatively small number produced, we think it is an interesting coin should collector demand increase.
