About this coin

The 1989 Gold Proof Double Sovereign was issued by The Royal Mint to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the first Gold Sovereign, introduced during the reign of Henry VII in 1489. Marking five centuries of British coinage history, this special anniversary edition features a distinctive Tudor inspired design created exclusively for the 1989 Sovereign range. This example has been authenticated and encapsulated by NGC with the grade PF64 Ultra Cameo, recognising its proof finish and the strong contrast between the frosted designs and mirrored fields.

The obverse features an exceptional depiction of Queen Elizabeth II seated in St Edward's Chair, inspired by the original Sovereign's portrayal of the monarch in majesty. Designed by Bernard Sindall, the composition shows the Queen holding the traditional symbols of royal authority, surrounded by the inscription ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REG FID DEF. This departure from the conventional profile portraits of Elizabeth II makes the 1989 issue particularly distinctive within the modern Sovereign series.

The reverse features Bernard Sindall's interpretation of the Royal Arms, displayed upon a double Tudor rose and surmounted by an open royal crown. The surrounding inscription, ANNIVERSARY OF THE GOLD SOVEREIGN 1489 to 1989, commemorates the coin's historic origins and reflects the heraldic symbolism of the original 1489 issue. Struck in 22 carat gold to proof standard, the design combines historic royal imagery with finely detailed relief set against polished fields.

With a worldwide proof mintage of 14,936 coins, the 1989 Gold Double Sovereign represents a significant commemorative release within the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Combining a design used for only one year, the historic Tudor rose motif and NGC PF64 Ultra Cameo certification, this Double Sovereign brings together five centuries of royal heritage and modern numismatic craftsmanship.
