About this coin
The 1989 Gold Proof Sovereign was issued by The Royal Mint to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the first Gold Sovereign, introduced during the reign of Henry VII in 1489. Marking five centuries of British coinage history, this special anniversary edition features a distinctive Tudor inspired design created exclusively for the 1989 Sovereign range. This example has been authenticated and encapsulated by NGC with the grade PF68 Ultra Cameo, recognising its high-quality proof finish and the pronounced contrast between the frosted designs and mirrored fields.
The obverse features an exceptional depiction of Queen Elizabeth II seated in St Edward's Chair, inspired by the original Sovereign's portrayal of the monarch in majesty. Designed by Bernard Sindall, the composition shows the Queen holding the traditional symbols of royal authority, surrounded by the inscription ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REG FID DEF. This departure from the conventional profile portraits of Elizabeth II makes the 1989 issue particularly distinctive within the modern Sovereign series.
The reverse features Bernard Sindall's interpretation of the Royal Arms, displayed upon a double Tudor rose and surmounted by an open royal crown. The surrounding inscription, ANNIVERSARY OF THE GOLD SOVEREIGN 1489 to 1989, commemorates the coin's historic origins and highlights the connection between the original Tudor Sovereign and its modern commemorative counterpart. Struck in 22 carat gold to proof standard, the design draws directly upon the heraldic symbolism of the original 1489 issue, with finely detailed relief set against polished fields.
With a worldwide proof mintage of 23,471 coins, including examples issued in presentation sets, the 1989 Gold Sovereign represents a significant commemorative release within the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Combining a design used for only one year, the historic Tudor rose motif and NGC PF68 Ultra Cameo certification, this Sovereign brings together five centuries of royal heritage and modern numismatic craftsmanship.
NGC PF68 Ultra Cameo, a high numerical proof grade combined with the Ultra Cameo designation, recognising pronounced contrast between frosted designs and mirrored fields.
