The 1993 Gold Proof Sovereign continues a tradition of British gold coinage dating back to the introduction of the modern Sovereign in 1817. The obverse features Raphael Maklouf's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the third definitive effigy of her reign, used on British coinage between 1985 and 1997. Depicting the Queen wearing a royal diadem, the portrait carries the designer's initials, RDM, at the truncation of the neck. Issued in the year of the 40th anniversary of her coronation, the coin belongs to a distinctive period in Elizabeth II's numismatic history.

The reverse features Benedetto Pistrucci's enduring depiction of Saint George slaying the dragon, with the mounted saint positioned above the fallen creature and the date beneath the scene. First created for the Sovereign of 1817, the composition connects this 1993 issue to the denomination's nineteenth-century origins.
