1982 Full Sovereign Proof · PCGS PR70 Deep Cameo

The 1982 Gold Proof Sovereign brings together Arnold Machin’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the historic Saint George reverse in a carefully struck collector’s issue. This example has been authenticated and encapsulated by PCGS with the grade PR70 DCAM, combining the highest numerical grade on the Sheldon scale with the Deep Cameo designation for pronounced contrast between the frosted details and mirrored fields.

The obverse features the second definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, created by Arnold Machin. Depicting the Queen facing right and wearing a tiara, the design represents a familiar chapter in British coinage before the introduction of Raphael Maklouf’s portrait in 1985.

The reverse features Benedetto Pistrucci’s celebrated depiction of Saint George slaying the dragon. The mounted saint, flowing cape and dragon beneath the horse form a composition first introduced on the modern Sovereign in 1817. Reproduced here in proof finish, the design retains its connection to the coinage reforms that restored the Sovereign during the reign of George III.

Struck in 22 carat gold to the traditional Sovereign specification, the 1982 issue combines an established royal portrait with one of Britain’s most enduring coin designs. Its PCGS PR70 DCAM certification makes this a particularly well-preserved example of the proof Sovereigns issued during the Machin portrait era.
