1989 Sovereign, 500th Anniversary · NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo

The 1989 Gold Proof Sovereign commemorates 500 years since the first Sovereign was introduced under Henry VII in 1489. To mark this milestone, The Royal Mint commissioned special designs for both sides of the coin, drawing directly on its Tudor origins. This example has been authenticated and encapsulated by NGC with the grade PF70 Ultra Cameo, combining the highest numerical grade with pronounced contrast between the frosted design and mirrored fields.

The obverse features Bernard Sindall’s depiction of Queen Elizabeth II seated facing on the Coronation Chair. Replacing the familiar profile portrait, this formal composition recalls the enthroned image of Henry VII on the original Sovereign. It connects the coin’s Tudor beginnings with the reign of Elizabeth II, five centuries later.

The reverse, also designed by Sindall, presents a crowned shield of the Royal Arms upon a double Tudor rose. This heraldic arrangement echoes the reverse of the 1489 Sovereign, while the surrounding anniversary inscription records the dates 1489–1989. Together, the designs create a deliberate tribute to the appearance and royal symbolism of the original coin.

Struck in 22 carat gold to proof standard, the 1989 Sovereign occupies a distinctive place within the modern series. Its anniversary designs depart from both the conventional royal portrait and Pistrucci’s Saint George reverse, giving this NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo example a character firmly rooted in the Sovereign’s earliest history.
