Issued to mark the 500th anniversary of the first sovereign of 1489, this 1989 double sovereign replaces the traditional St George design with the Royal Arms on a double Tudor rose, inscribed 1489 to 1989 ANNIVERSARY OF THE GOLD SOVEREIGN. The obverse shows Queen Elizabeth II enthroned at her Coronation, reflecting the ceremonial nature of the issue.
