2017 Sovereign 200th Anniversary · PCGS PR70 Deep Cameo

The 2017 Gold Proof Sovereign marks the 200th anniversary of the modern Sovereign, first introduced in 1817 during the reign of King George III. This example has been authenticated and encapsulated by PCGS with the grade PR70, the highest numerical grade on the Sheldon scale.

Issued to celebrate two centuries of one of Britain's most recognised gold coins, this anniversary edition returns to the design that began the modern Sovereign's story. The obverse features Jody Clark's fifth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, with the date appearing alongside the surrounding inscription.

The reverse features a remastered version of Benedetto Pistrucci's original 1817 depiction of Saint George slaying the dragon. Framed by the garter that distinguished the original design, it bears the inscription “HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE”, the motto of the Order of the Garter. Struck in 22 carat gold to the traditional Sovereign specification, the coin brings the detail of this historic composition into focus through its proof finish.

With a total mintage of 13,500, the 2017 Gold Proof Sovereign connects the origins of the modern Sovereign with the reign of Britain's longest-serving monarch. Its bicentenary design and PCGS PR70 certification make it a distinctive example of this anniversary issue.
