About this coin
The 2012 Gold Proof £1 was issued by The Royal Mint during the Diamond Jubilee year of Queen Elizabeth II, commemorating 60 years since her accession to the throne in 1952. With an exceptionally limited mintage of just 150 coins worldwide, this gold proof edition represents a particularly scarce issue within modern British coinage. This example has been authenticated and encapsulated by NGC with the highest possible grade of PF70 Ultra Cameo and is one of just five examples reported at NGC in this grade, placing it among the joint finest certified examples.
The obverse features the fourth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. Depicting the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, the portrait is accompanied by the traditional royal inscription and the year 2012. Introduced to British coinage in 1998, Rank-Broadley's portrait remained in use until 2015 and is closely associated with the later decades of Queen Elizabeth II's reign.
The reverse features Matthew Dent's contemporary interpretation of the Royal Shield of Arms, with the individual sections of the shield representing the historic nations of the United Kingdom. Introduced in 2008 as part of a coordinated redesign of Britain's circulating coinage, the composition brings together traditional heraldic symbolism and modern numismatic design. Struck in 22 carat gold to proof standard, the coin displays finely frosted details against deeply mirrored fields, emphasising the distinctive geometry of the Royal Shield.
With only 150 examples minted worldwide, the 2012 Gold Proof £1 is an exceptionally limited issue from the Diamond Jubilee year. Its reported NGC population of just five examples graded PF70 Ultra Cameo further distinguishes this particular coin, combining the highest numerical proof grade with a remarkably small certified population. Bringing together a significant royal anniversary, an exceptionally restricted mintage and joint-finest NGC certification, this example occupies a distinctive position within modern British gold coinage.
Only 150 coins minted worldwide, an exceptionally limited Royal Mint gold proof mintage from Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee year.
One of just five at NGC in PF70 Ultra Cameo, according to the supplied population figure, placing this example among the joint finest certified coins of its type.
NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo, combining the highest possible numerical proof grade with the Ultra Cameo designation for exceptional contrast between frosted designs and deeply mirrored fields.
The low mintage is another positive from a collecting point of view. There is no guarantee of what a coin may do in the future, but with only a relatively small number produced, we think it is an interesting coin should collector demand increase.
