About this coin
The 1993 Gold Proof Double Sovereign presents two familiar designs from British coinage on a larger scale, pairing Raphael Maklouf’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with Pistrucci’s Saint George reverse. This example has been authenticated and encapsulated by PCGS with the grade PR69 DCAM, recognising a near-flawless proof coin with pronounced contrast between the frosted details and mirrored fields.
The obverse features Maklouf’s third definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, used on British coinage between 1985 and 1997. Depicting the Queen facing right and wearing the Diamond Diadem, earrings and a necklace, the portrait gives this issue the distinctive appearance associated with the Sovereigns of this period.
The reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci’s celebrated depiction of Saint George slaying the dragon, with the date beneath the scene. Originally introduced on the modern Sovereign in 1817, the composition remains closely associated with the Sovereign family. The Double Sovereign’s broader surface allows the detail of the horse, rider and dragon to be appreciated against the polished proof fields.
Struck in 22 carat gold and weighing 15.98 grams, the Double Sovereign contains twice the gold content of a full Sovereign. With a reported mintage of 2,155, the 1993 proof issue combines a relatively small production with an established design pairing. Its PCGS PR69 DCAM certification recognises the quality and Deep Cameo contrast of this example.
PCGS PR69 DCAM, authenticated and encapsulated as a near-flawless proof with the Deep Cameo designation.
Reported mintage of 2,155, offering collectors a limited-production Double Sovereign from 1993.
Classic Maklouf and Pistrucci designs, presented on the larger Double Sovereign in 22 carat gold.
The low mintage is another positive from a collecting point of view. There is no guarantee of what a coin may do in the future, but with only a relatively small number produced, we think it is an interesting coin should collector demand increase.
