About this coin
The 1937 Gold Proof Half Sovereign was issued by The Royal Mint to commemorate the coronation of King George VI, who ascended the throne following the abdication of his elder brother, Edward VIII, in December 1936. Struck as part of a special four-coin gold proof set, this coronation issue represents the only Half Sovereign design produced bearing the portrait of George VI. With a recorded proof mintage of 5,501 coins, it occupies a distinctive position within twentieth-century British gold coinage. This example has been authenticated and encapsulated by PCGS with the grade PR62 Cameo, recognising its proof manufacture and individual level of preservation.
The obverse features the uncrowned portrait of King George VI, designed by sculptor Humphrey Paget specifically for the new monarch's coinage. The King is depicted bare-headed and facing left, with Paget's initials, HP, appearing beneath the portrait. Surrounding the effigy is the Latin inscription GEORGIVS VI D:G: BR: OMN: REX F:D: IND: IMP, reflecting the King's royal titles. Paget's portrait became one of the defining images of George VI's reign and is particularly significant on the 1937 gold Sovereign series, which was never issued for general circulation.
The reverse features Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic depiction of Saint George slaying the dragon, a design first introduced on the modern Sovereign in 1817. Saint George is shown mounted on horseback, raising his sword against the dragon, with the date 1937 positioned beneath the ground line. Struck in 22 carat gold to proof standard, the coin features a plain edge rather than the traditional milled edge associated with circulating Sovereigns. The specially prepared dies and polished blanks highlight the intricate detail of Pistrucci's celebrated composition.
With a recorded mintage of just 5,501 examples, the 1937 Gold Proof Half Sovereign forms part of the only gold Sovereign series to feature King George VI's portrait. Originally issued alongside the Full Sovereign, Double Sovereign and Five Sovereign in a commemorative coronation set, these coins represent a notable chapter in British numismatic history. Combining a significant royal milestone, Humphrey Paget's distinctive portrait and Pistrucci's enduring reverse design, this PCGS PR62 Cameo half sovereign reflects the craftsmanship and historical significance of The Royal Mint's 1937 coronation issue.
PCGS PR62 Cameo, an independently assessed proof coin from the historic 1937 coronation issue, sealed in its holder.
Limited proof mintage of 5,501, originally produced as part of the four-coin gold proof sets commemorating the coronation of King George VI.
The only Half Sovereign design bearing George VI's portrait, featuring Humphrey Paget's first coinage effigy of the King alongside Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic Saint George and the dragon reverse.
The low mintage is another positive from a collecting point of view. There is no guarantee of what a coin may do in the future, but with only a relatively small number produced, we think it is an interesting coin should collector demand increase.
