Issued on 3 October 2022, this commemorative £5 gold coin forms part of the first official coinage of King Charles III, released to honour the life and legacy of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The coin features the first definitive portrait of His Majesty The King, created by British sculptor Martin Jennings, marking the beginning of a new chapter in British coinage.

Following long-standing tradition, the King’s effigy faces left, the opposite direction to Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait during her reign. The surrounding Latin inscription “CHARLES III • D • G • REX • F • D” translates to “King Charles III, by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith.”

The reverse, designed by John Bergdahl in collaboration with The Royal Mint, features two portraits of Queen Elizabeth II, forming part of the wider memorial coin collection that also included a commemorative 50p released into UK circulation.

Struck in 22 carat gold to a proof finish, this £5 coin commemorates both the remarkable reign of Queen Elizabeth II and the beginning of the reign of King Charles III.
